I hold a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from Texas A&M with double minors in psychology and higher education. My area of expertise within my doctoral program was Counselor Education.
My career has encompassed many areas such as working as a counselor in community mental health centers, in university counseling centers, private practice, directing a university counseling center, and serving as a faculty member in the graduate counselor education departments of various universities.
While I have experience in several arenas, fortunately I finally discovered my true career passion is teaching and I have done that at many different levels from being an 8th-12th grade English teacher to teaching masters level counseling students as a TA while in my doctoral program to teaching both masters and doctoral level graduate students at universities both in Texas and in Georgia. Along the way, I began presenting workshops, seminars, and trainings both part-time and full-time, finding yet another way to share information. I discovered that this method of teaching was the one in which I truly felt at home.
Through my company, Dr. Karen McCleskey, Inc., I have provided hundreds of presentations for mental health professionals seeking CEU’s and for agencies, organizations, and universities. My area of expertise evolved into Ethics and I had the privilege of serving the American Counseling Association as a member, the junior co-chair, and the senior chair of their national Ethics committee.
While I consider my role on ACA’s Ethics committee an incredible honor, I consider the following two additional awards the highest on my list of accomplishments: I was selected as Georgia Counselor Educator of the Year and I also was the recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. (In the spirit of full disclosure, the president was the university president, not the president of the United States.) I truly value this award among my highest as it came from the many students I have taught.
I am the author of five books: (Free samples of each book are available on 'Karen's E-Books' page)
***A Simple Guide to a Happier Life
***How to Create a Love That Lasts
***Attachment: What It Is, How to Do It, and Why It Matters So Much
***16 Of The Greatest Lies You Were Ever Told
***Spirituality and Psychotherapy: How To Use Them Together For Profound Life Changes
None of these are best sellers yet, but given that I am pathologically optimistic, I look forward to the day when at least one of them will be. All are available on Amazon.com as Kindle e-books. Just go to the Amazon home page and in the white bar for 'All Depts.' type in Dr. Karen McCleskey.
I have had the privilege of being interviewed on radio shows in Georgia and Texas, plus I had the exciting honor of having an invited quote included in the Jay Conrad Levinson's Guerrilla Marketing Series (Guerrilla Job Escape Plan).
I'm known for my practical, down-to-earth, and humorous approach to presenting. Through the years many things have been said about me and my presentations, but the following is my absolute favorite. After I completed a workshop for a group of therapists, a woman came up to me and said “Your workshop is the least boring one I’ve ever been to!” As I continue in the many teaching facets of my career, I maintain my goal of presenting the least boring workshops people have ever attended.

Below are the survivors of Pal's rather unsuccessful attempts to 'play' with them. All made a full and speedy recovery.
I have several goals, but these 2 photos represent 3 of them: keep finding great places to hike, dress up as little as humanly possible, and do everything I can to be a 'Front Row Woman'.
Please be sure to scroll all the way down to see some great photos.
This is Pal. He's a white (when I bathe him) Miniature Schnauzer and the love of my life. On the left is his baby picture. He was 6 weeks old; on the right is his 'dress up' picture when he was 2 years old. He's 4 now and he's in a LOT of the pictures in the Slideshow. Be sure to click on Slideshow in the menu to the right to check out a lot of really amazing pictures (more than just ones of Pal...)
